Hanukkah is one of the minorities of holidays in Judaism that are not instituted from the Torah commandments. Hanukkah commemorates a post-biblical event: the unprecedented victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian-Greek rulers and regaining control of Jerusalem as well as the rededication of the Holy Temple around the year 164 BCE. The Military victory of the Maccabees over their foes, though astounding of itself, did not strike the Rabbis as miraculous so they rabbis focused on the apparently miraculous event where pure olive oil, bearing the seal of the high priest lasted eight days while new oil could be produced than on the win of the Maccabees.
Hanukkah, as is widely known, is celebrated for eight days and commemorated by lighting oil or candles in the Hanukkah menorah, starting with the Twenty-fifth Kislev all the eight nights of the festival. Given that Hanukkah falls 4 nights ahead of the new moon and close to the wintertime solstice (a winter night that is the longest night of the year), it seems like only natural for the menorah to be the key element with this holiday, the Festival of Lights.
