A beautiful, artfully decorated rectangularly shaped Judaica Hanukkah menorah, made from glass and painted with a variety of charming floral patterns in multiple shades of blue, reminiscent of old-fashioned wallpaper designs. It is gracefully ornamented with eight regular candle or oil holders, as well as one for a “shamash” (central candle/light) in the very center of the candelabra. The holiday of Chanuka originated during the second Temple (Bayit Sheini) era (515 BCE to 70 CE). The ancient Assyrians conquered and occupied the Holy Land, and as part of their subjugation of the native Israelites, they defiled the Temple and restricted the people’s social and religious rights. A family of priests, the Maccabees, led a revolt against the invaders and were victorious. Following this victory, the Jews planned to restore the Temple and its functions. The Menorah which stood inside could only be kindled with pure olive oil - of the stores of consecrated oil, only one remained undefiled by the Assyrians. But this seemingly small amount kept the menorah bright for eight days. Today, Jews commemorate this miracle by lighting small menorot of their own for eight days on Chanuka.
